Steve Ballmer
Former CEO of Microsoft & Owner of the LA Clippers
Steve Ballmer is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist best known for his high-energy leadership style and his foundational role at Microsoft. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1977 with a degree in mathematics and economics, where he also managed the football team and lived down the hall from Bill Gates. Dropping out of Stanford’s MBA program in 1980, Ballmer became Microsoft’s first business manager and 30th employee. Over the next two decades, he headed multiple key divisions, eventually succeeding Gates as CEO in 2000. During his 14-year tenure as chief executive, he guided Microsoft through the post-dot-com crash, tripled its revenue to nearly $80 billion, doubled its profits, grew the Windows and Office franchises, and oversaw the launch of the Xbox and Bing.
After retiring from Microsoft in 2014, Ballmer pivoted to professional sports by purchasing the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers for a record $2 billion. He quickly became a fan favorite and celebrity courtside presence due to his explosive, passionate enthusiasm during games. His ownership culminated in a massive commitment to the franchise, including the opening of their own state-of-the-art arena, the Intuit Dome. Beyond sports and business, Ballmer is a major philanthropist. Alongside his wife, Connie, he co-founded the Ballmer Group to support economic mobility for families facing poverty, and he created USAFacts, a nonpartisan initiative designed to make government data accessible and transparent to the public.
