Alexis Ohanian
American internet entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and prominent public figure
Alexis Ohanian is an American internet entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and prominent public figure best known as the co-founder of the social media platform Reddit. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to a family of Armenian and German heritage, he graduated from the University of Virginia with degrees in commerce and history. In 2005, alongside his college roommate Steve Huffman, Ohanian pitched an initial idea to the startup accelerator Y Combinator, which morphed into Reddit—a platform that would eventually grow to become one of the most visited websites in the world, often dubbed “the front page of the internet.” After Condé Nast acquired the company in 2006, Ohanian continued to serve on its board of directors for years, ultimately stepping down in 2020 to urge the company to seat a Black candidate in his place, a major move toward diversifying corporate leadership.
Beyond Reddit, Ohanian has built a massive footprint as a venture capitalist and sports investor. He co-founded Initialized Capital, an early-stage venture firm that backed major tech successes like Coinbase and Instacart, before launching his own purpose-driven venture firm, Seven Seven Six, which focuses on tech startups with a strong emphasis on social and environmental impact. His mainstream celebrity status skyrocketed globally following his marriage to tennis icon Serena Williams, with whom he shares two daughters. Leveraging his passion for sports and equity, Ohanian became the principal investor and founding owner of Angel City FC, a highly successful Los Angeles-based team in the National Women’s Soccer League. A vocal activist, he frequently champions paid family leave, tech ethics, and the elevation of women’s professional sports.
